How to deal with GSM jammers

Most alarms are now wireless, so some burglars have for some exchanged their cutting pliers by a jammer GSM.

The jammers or GSM jammers are indeed the new weapon of thugs to neutralize the communication of GSM alarms.

A GSM jammer can fit in a pocket and there are entry-level for less than 50 €. This type of equipment only equips certain organized criminals, a small proportion of burglars but that should grow as long as this technology proves to be a little effective. This type of equipment is regulated, not to say prohibited on the French territory, at least for individuals, but we can of course easily obtain the models “prohibited” in a few clicks on the Internet.

Operation of a GSM jammer

The GSM scrambler or jammer GSM only conceals the GSM band. The radio communication of the plant and its elements is not affected because it passes through the bands 433 and / or 868Mhz.

Burglars therefore use a GSM jammer to block the delivery of the alert by phone. In addition, the burglar can also cut the telephone line, to ensure that no alert will leave the property.

How to guard your GSM jamming alarm system

At all evil its remedy and alarm manufacturers have not been slow to react by developing countermeasures.

The most secure models of alarm have indeed several technologies allowing them to locate and to foil the jammers GSM:

Jamming detection

This feature is to spot GSM signal losses and interpret them for what they are: an attempt at sabotage. The control unit then sends an alert to signal the interference via another of its communication channels.

GSM + PSTN communication

In case of alarm the control panel uses the available communication channel. Since most alarm systems have a line break alert, the user will immediately be notified of the fault of one of the two lines.

The IP protocol transits via the ADSL line which can be physically cut but IP-only alarms are not very secure and the risk of untimely alarm is high if the box is reset too long because the alarm interprets this cut as a potential sabotage.

The 433Mhz 868Mhz radio cell phone jammer

Wave jamming technology is not limited to GSM. There are also jammers operating on the wireless link channels commonly used for communicating alarm panels and their wireless devices.

This type of wave jammer can completely neutralize the detection system of an alarm system. Almost all current alarm systems, however, have a self-monitoring function that protects them from this type of incident: in case of non-detection of one or more detectors, the control unit warns its owners by SMS or call telephone.
