The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) can set up jammers along India’s international borders to block cell phone signals from neighboring countries as a counter-terrorism measure. Kolkata: The Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) can set up jammers along India’s international borders to block cell phone signals from neighboring countries as a counter-terrorism measure. According to the minutes of the meeting of the Inter-Ministry Surveillance Group seen by ET, although the State Department of India is likely to solve the problem of mobile phone signal overflow along the border with neighboring India through diplomatic channels, it still recommends setting up the first jamming signal along the India-Pakistan border.
The government is working hard to control the potential cross-border overflow of mobile phone signals to prevent unauthorized access to the cellular networks of neighboring countries such as Pakistan, especially because the overflow will facilitate communication between terrorists. The Telecommunications Engineering Center (TEC), the technical department of DoT, is studying the feasibility of creating electronic fences by “installing wifi jammer to block GSM and CDMA phone signals from foreign operators in neighboring countries.” However, the Ministry of Defense is not very enthusiastic about planning to use jammers.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Defense who attended the meeting said: “Operating and maintaining various jammers on international borders will be a major challenge.” They also pointed out that such blocking of mobile signals from neighboring countries will require the installation of a large number of jammers. Transmitter, because this type of equipment can effectively block 3 to 4 km, which may not be possible. It also instructed DoT to expedite steps to prevent cellular signals from Indian telecom operators from spreading across international borders.
This is especially true after Pakistan’s telecommunications regulator asked the country’s leaders to propose to India earlier this year to resolve the issue of dismantling cell phone towers near the border. Allegedly, the signal from the tower has reached the country’s territory. According to reports, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority claimed that these signals came from mobile towers in India near the border between India and Pakistan.
