The Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) can install jammers along India’s international border to block cell phone signals from neighboring countries as a counter-terrorism measure. Kolkata: The Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) can install jammers along India’s international borders to block cell phone signals from neighboring countries as a counter-terrorism measure. According to the minutes of the Inter-Ministerial Surveillance Team meeting observed by ET, although the Indian State Council may solve the problem of cell phone signal overflow along the Indian border with neighboring countries through diplomatic channels, it is recommended to install the first interference signal along the India-Pakistan border.
The government is trying to control the possibility of cross-border cell phone signal spillovers to prevent unauthorized entry into the mobile phone networks of neighboring countries such as Pakistan, especially because spillovers can promote communication between terrorists. DoT’s technical department, the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC), is studying the feasibility of creating an electronic fence by “installing portable jammer to block GSM and CDMA phone signals from foreign operators in neighboring countries.” The Ministry of Defense is not too enthusiastic about the planned use of jammers.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Defense said at the meeting: “Operating and maintaining various jammers on international borders will be a major challenge.” They also pointed out that such jamming of mobile signals from neighboring countries will require the installation of a large number of jamming transmitters , Because such equipment can effectively block 3 to 4 km, which may not be possible. DoT was also instructed to expedite steps to prevent the spread of cellular signals from Indian telecom operators internationally.
This was especially true after Pakistan’s telecommunications regulator earlier this year asked the country’s leaders to propose to India to resolve the issue of dismantling cell phone towers near the border. Allegedly, the signal from the tower has been transmitted to the country’s territory. According to reports, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority claimed that these signals came from a cell phone tower in India near the border between India and Pakistan.
